Over the last few years, India's coffee market has suffered from inconsistent quality due to excessive droughts. These have affected the growing conditions of the coffee trees, causing the seeds to underdevelop. However, farms, estates, and plantations focused on quality have implemented innovative irrigation to combat drought.
The lower harvest volumes for crops in 2017, 2018, and 2019 meant prices for single-origin Indian coffees spiked upwards. Many Australian raw coffee importers lowered or even dropped their Indian sourcing, leading to even more price pressure for coffee roasters accustomed to how Indian coffees work so well in their blends.
Consequently, we have also reduced our range of Indian coffees. We dropped Tiger Mountain and Elk Hill this year. Hopefully, supply will return, and we can stock these great single-origin Indian coffee beans again soon.
