Engineering the best Nespresso-compatible coffee experience
We started our involvement in single-serve, portion-control coffees back in 2009.
The technology has changed, improved and evolved in 15 years since we started producing and selling pods or capsules.
Today, we are onto our 5th generation Nespresso compatible capsule/pod, and the technology has proven successful since we introduced this high-performance flavour-lock system in 2020.
You may be wondering why there have been so many different types of pods or capsules.
Nespresso-compatible capsules are constantly changing, ever so slightly, for improved performance.
Early generation systems used essential plastic moulded bases with pre-made brew holes that required a separate foil overwrap to preserve freshness.
Some of those early capsules were prone to brew or fit issues, and the capsule makers often released revised designs to improve their usability.
With a keen imperative to switch our capsules to compostable materials, we adopted the Italian-made compostable base with paper lid material.
However, these early editions of environmentally friendly packaging were prone to higher levels of brew defects, melting and the not-so-insignificant problem of needing help to keep the coffee ingredients fresh.
These compostable capsules needed a giant outer bag that was foil-lined with adequate barrier protection, which was a pointless exercise as there were no proper savings and yet the coffee still required to keep fresh.
Along with a raft of other problems relating to recyclable and compostable materials, we ultimately became frustrated and annoyed at how a "green" solution was destroying the quality of our ingredients.
We knew what was needed.
A high-tech alternative to aluminium provides excellent barrier protection that keeps volatile compounds from the freshly roasted coffees locked inside the capsule.
After all, if the product is compromised by staling, then all those high costs and effort of using quality ingredients, expert advanced roasting systems and temperature-controlled storage are wasted and lost.
The Australian coffee capsule market.
The first thing we need to get out of the way is terminology.
The correct term for Nespresso-compatible classic systems is a capsule, although many still refer to capsules as pods.
That's perfectly OK.
Many different types of capsule and pod systems are in use throughout Australia. It is essential to understand that not all machines and consumables are compatible.
We sold ESE pods for 13 years; they look different from Nespresso-compatible capsules, yet customers still regularly purchase ESE pods for their Nespresso capsule machine and vice-versa.
All this despite plenty of clear pictures depicting the physical shape and size in real life, along with many warning messages in the product description.
Nespresso enjoys a significant market share for capsules that work on compatible machines.
Currently, Nespresso genuine capsules sold in Australia are made overseas and sea-freighted into Australia.
Despite being clad in aluminium, there is a severe heat problem during container transit, and roasted coffee does not tolerate heat.
Regarding the clone market (Nespresso-compatible capsules or pods) in Australia, most retailers of compatible capsules are selling a capsule made by someone else.
That means it's not their coffee inside the capsule or pod.
Around 98% of brands selling Nespresso-compatible capsules in Australia outsource coffee capsule or pod manufacturing to a small handful of contract converters.
Many online brands do not roast coffee. It is disappointing when those brands might also claim quality and sourcing ethics.
What Makes Our Nespresso-compatible Coffee Capsules Different?
Our Nespresso-compatible coffee capsules are precision-engineered, with every step of the process extensively managed.
It starts with the advanced technology materials used for our Nespresso-compatible coffee capsule.
Our capsule base performs far superior to all current compostable or recyclable capsules at locking in delicate and sensitive coffees.
Anyone who knows something about coffee already understands that the best-tasting coffees are only when fresh.
Materials used for our high-performance capsule base and specialised lid form a critical barrier that preserves the coffee's aroma, taste, body, sweetness and acidity.
Fresh roasted and ground coffee goes stale in 15 minutes of oxygen exposure.
Environmentally friendly capsules do not provide adequate barrier protection that keeps roasted and ground coffee fresh.
Many compostable capsules require a specialised industrial compost solution.
Our mycuppa.com.au Nespresso-compatible coffee capsules contain 5.0 and 5.4g of premium-grade, 100% arabica, freshly roasted and ground coffee.
There will be variation due to differences between the types of arabica coffees.
Our lid is made in Austria using a special food-grade foil that assists the brewing process whilst also locking in freshness to ensure you can enjoy the capsule in peak, optimal quality.
The foil lid is easily removed and placed into the recycling waste.
Bio capsules use paper-based resins that leach out volatile compounds in freshly roasted coffee, rendering the capsule stale and tasting inferior.
Will the mycuppa.com.au capsules work in all types of capsule machines?
Our capsules are compatible with machines using authentic, authorised type U, Lattissima, Inissia, Maistria, Essenza, Citiz and Pixie-compatible capsule machine systems—many licensed brands of these systems now, such as Breville and De-Longhi.
